Cupcakes are one of our most popular recipes in our kids cooking classes, birthday parties – our most popular of which is our signature Cupcake Wars Birthday Party – and adult cooking events. Cupcakes are perfectly delicious topped with buttercream frosting and sprinkles. But sometimes you want to take your cupcake creations even further and add that special “wow” factor!
Want to learn how to use fondant like they do at professional bakeries? We’ve mastered a simple-step way to form a Fondant Rose which is guaranteed to impress all of your friends!
First you may ask, what is fondant? Fondant is an edible icing used to form and sculpt cakes, derived from the french word to mean “melting”. The type of fondant we want to use for our Fondant Roses is called Rolled Fondant, this is the fondant that is pliable and dough-like. It can be purchased from you local cake store or found online. There is also a simple way to make fondant at home using Powdered Sugar and Marshmallows but we’ll save that for another time.
Fondant Rose Instructions:
- Color your fondant to desired color using gel food coloring. We’re using yellow today. Apply just a touch of gel coloring and massage it into the fondant. Be sure to wear plastic gloves if you don’t want your hands to be dyed the same color for the next few days. Also be sure to protect your counter or surface from the color, especially if it is porous.
- Next, split you fondant into (5) equal pea size balls and (1) ball that is shaped like a cylinder and slighter smaller. The cylinder will be the center of your flower and the pea size balls will be your petals. If you want to make a larger rose, feel free to make more petals.
- Next flatten your pieces of fondant. To make flattening easy, place the pieces of fondant between plastic sheets (we use sheet protectors but a baggie or wax paper works well too) and press with your thumb. You want the cylinder piece to be as flat as possible as this will become the “center” of our rose. If fondant gets sticky sprinkle with powdered sugar. Next flatten the fondant “petals” which will be made with the remaining (5) pea sized balls of fondant.
- To assemble your flower, start with the flattened cylinder, now an oval shaped piece, and roll it into a swirl. You now have the center of your rose.
- Next, add on one petal at a time and fold it around the center of the rose. Take care to slightly bend your petals outwards as you add them to best mimic the look of an actual rose flower.
- Once complete, you can either lay the rose flat on a cupcake or cake or if you’d like to see the rose head-on, pinch off the base and apply it that way. In either case, feel free to take it up a notch by adding on fondant rose petals and pipe a stem with frosting or rolling fondant.
